Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline wrote an article centered around the things he heard during Day 6 of the NFL Scouting Combine. Pauline wrapped up his article with one sentence: “Finally, I’m told the New Orleans Saints are considering releasing 32-year-old safety Tyrann Mathieu, who has one year left on his deal with the club.”
That’s all Pauline wrote on the topic, no elaboration on why the Saints could make this decision. It was enough to spark conversation, possibly because Mathieu’s future has been questioned by fans this offseason. As a veteran player in a situation with a new head coach, it would make some sense if there were conversations around the future of the team’s older players. But Mathieu’s contract is laid out to where it would cost more money to cut him than to keep him. Using a post-June 1 designation wouldn’t help the Saints get under the salary cap.
