The New Orleans Saints started their list of offseason moves by releasing veteran running back Jamaal Williams, per KPRC 2 Houston’s NFL beat reporter Aaron Wilson. Williams, 30, signed a three-year contract with the Saints back in 2023 but never really established himself as a viable part of the rotation at running back. Releasing him outright saves $1.59 million against the cap this year, while a post-June 1 designation would bring in $3.15 million in savings on June 2.
It’s a shame that things didn’t work out on the field. Williams brought a lot of positive energy to training camp practices and the locker room and worked hard to cultivate a good relationship with fans. That just didn’t translate to productive running between the tackles which was why the Saints signed him in the first place. Williams led the league with 17 touchdown runs in 2022 on the Detroit Lions but only scored twice in two years with the Saints.
Now they’ll be looking for another No. 2 running back behind Alvin Kamara. Rushers on the roster for 2025 include Jordan Mims, Kendre Miller, Xazavian Valladay and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
